What does packaging mean to you?

The word packaging is generic and broad. For some companies, this might mean a plastic clamshell for a lightbulb that is being displayed on a store shelf at The Home Depot. For another customer, it might mean a returnable tote for headlights shipping into a high-speed automobile assembly plant.

For this reason, BoldtSmith Packaging has a team of packaging experts with varying backgrounds in the world of packaging. Learn more about our team of packaging engineers and their backgrounds.

Despite the different viewpoints on the packaging, often the goals have a commonality. The purpose and role of packaging is quite simple. Deliver the product to the customer. Sure, of course, there are nuances within this but this is the main objective of a package.

How does this relate to packaging optimization? Based on our experience in the world of packaging, we have compiled a high-level list that captures 4 common projects we are tasked to complete.

Packaging cost savings

Customers are seeking alternate designs and materials to create a packaging design that reduces costs. What these costs are vary by customer and project but below are a few.

  • Packaging material costs
  • Packaging labor costs
  • Packaging freight costs

These are extremely rewarding projects for BoldtSmith Packaging Consultants as we are able to provide a return on investment numbers to customers. We recently completed a project that saved a customer over $1,500,000 in packaging costs.

Packaging damage reduction

The variety of products that are brought in for damage reduction varies from playground equipment manufactured domestically shipping in crates to windows manufactured overseas and shipping through an e-commerce seller.

With our use of data recording equipment to map the customers supply chain, we are able to determine the hazards that exist in our customers specific supply chain. This gives us the information to create a custom testing protocol that test our optimized packaging designs against.

Packaging with new product development

Pitching a new product line at a retailer requires having printed packaging samples and pricing to be successful at a line review. At BoldtSmith Packaging, we have two packaging engineers and a graphic designer that focus on new product development projects. From primary packaging samples to displays, we can do it all!

Packaging’s impact on customer experience

In recent years, we have seen an uptick in customers looking to increase the customer experience when receiving a product. This is often referred to as the “apple” packaging experience. However, this also includes Amazon’s frustration free package (FFP) push. In 2019, we created over 600 Amazon FFP designs.

The customer experience also can include component suppliers shipping parts into a product manufacturer. For example, a headlight is manufacturer in Taiwan and shipped into an assembly plant in Indiana. The customer in this scenario would be the operator unloading the headlight on the assembly line.
