Who is BoldtSmith Packaging?

John Boldt and Dustin Smith started BoldtSmith Packaging in 2013 after recognizing a demand for companies needing a temporary packaging engineer. These companies ranged from small start-ups launching a few SKUs into the market to large corporations with an existing team of packaging engineers requiring assistance for a specific project.

Since launching the company, we have expanded our business to include a team of packaging experts and the software and tools to provide the best possible service to our customers. Our warehouse located in Waukesha, WI allows us the ability to receive your products so we can design, sample and test optimized packaging solutions. Our team of experts have a variety of backgrounds in the packaging world which allows us to brainstorm creative solutions to packaging problems.

John has 20+ years of design and project management experience in a multitude of industries, specializing in returnable and disposable custom fabricated dunnage for customers such as Harley-Davidson, John Deere, Mercury Marine, Club Car, Bobcat, Bemis, and Modine.

Dustin Smith

Co-Founder and CEO

Prior to founding BoldtSmith, Dustin’s roles included Sr. Packaging Engineer at the Home Depot, responsible for managing retail packaging development and testing for globally sourced products. Earlier, Dustin worked with manufacturer’s that sold into Target, Wal-Mart and Walgreens under private label brands.


When you hire BoldtSmith Packaging, you are not hiring a single packaging engineer. You are hiring a team of packaging experts with experience, ranging but not limited to, designing clamshells for lightbulbs manufactured overseas to metal returnable crates shipping automobile components.


We complete design work and sampling internally. We do not need to lean on packaging manufacturer’s for support. The specifications we create are owned by our customers to purchase packaging from any supplier they want. This gives our client’s procurement department the power to negotiate packaging costs.


Our time is dedicated to value-added tasks such as design and testing. Our time is not spent going from meeting to meeting, which allows us to provide extremely specific, concentrated services. These services go beyond the corporate 9-5 schedule. Our schedules are set by customer deadlines.


Our selling point is not our project cost. Our selling point is the return on investment we provide to customer’s. We provide a non-biased viewpoint into our client’s packaging. If we discover the potential ROI does not meet our requirements based on the project cost, we provide this information to our client. We do not sell projects for the sake of selling projects, we want a ROI for our clients. In addition to the costs outlined in our capabilities, other cost variables to consider are no long-term commitments, no health benefits, 401k, etc in comparison to hiring a full-time packaging engineer.
